Not all the boat people were as lucky as Jim Armstrong. Lieutenant Roy Davidson was another young American who joined the fight in Europe at the toughest time of the war for the Eighth Air Force. He went on that fateful mission to Schweinfurt in October 1943, the day marked in American aviation history as Black Thursday. His B-17 was in the middle of the formation, usually the safest place to be. But that day the enemy fighters streamed straight into the heart of the pack rather than chipping away at the edges and he found himself in what seemed to him to be ‘the greatest air battle the world had ever known. It felt as if the whole German air force was coming at us from all directions. And they had two cracks at us. They hit us on our flight to the target, then refuelled and were ready for us again on our return flight.’19 It was on this leg that his B-17 was caught by a Messerschmitt. ‘The flaps and the elevator trim tabs were knocked out and the plane was trying to do a loop.’ He and the co-pilot struggled with the controls to keep the plane level, then ducked down into cloud cover, hoping to limp home. Two engines were out, and then a third began to stutter.
